You can’t plough a field by turning it over in your mind

I suffer from an ailment I think many do, in which I try to think through artistic problems when these can best be worked out physically. Making, discarding, creating iterations, making badly. So I have tried to take this opportunity to create my way through this process. This means many things I have created will probably not be seen outside of this blog/social media. And that is part of the process.

I have been exploring Victorian hairwork and the scientific/practical side of hair and both have been wonderfully rich – but I keep coming back to the colour chart that was gifted to me on the first day of the residency.

Its structure, the colours, the names, the codes. It’s such a rich soil to grow from.

My focus has turned to the codes, the hair colour samples and even the book itself. Bookbinding, interventions with the patterned hair loops and making the codes physical are my aim as I go forward.
